Navigating Zoom

How to Log-on to Zoom:

1.      Click on the link provided by the meeting organizer to enter the specific activity or Club event. Sometimes the link will be the same each time, other times it will be new. Note: If this is your first time using Zoom, while logging on, the link may request you to download the free & safe app. It will likely make sure you’re not a robot (you will check a box & answer simple questions). You do NOT have to purchase a Zoom account to use Zoom.

2.       Click the “Open zoom.us” box if prompted to do so. You may be asked to “join a meeting.” If you get this message, click on it.

3.       You may be requested to type in Meeting ID &/or just the Password given. This will be provided to you by the hosts in the meeting invitation.

4.       It will ask you to “Join without Video” or to “Join with Video.” Click your preference (it’s much more social to “Join with Video”). You may also need to click on the camera (on the bottom left if using a computer) to allow yourself to be seen.

5.       Click on “Join with Computer Audio.” The meeting may start with you automatically on mute. To unmute yourself, look for the microphone icon (usually bottom left of the Zoom window – it also says “Mute”) to toggle it on or off. Note: the host has the ability to mute people to focus on the main speaker.

* If you can’t log on, see tip #5 below.

Zoom Tips:

1.      Mute Microphone when not speaking.

2.      Keep background noise to a minimum. When the microphone is not muted, minimize things that create additional noise (e.g. shuffling papers, dogs… ).

3.      Position your camera properly: If you choose to use a web camera, be sure it is in a stable position and focused at eye level. This helps create a sense of engagement with other participants. Best to have light facing you rather than being backlit (e.g. don’t have a window behind you)

4.   If during the call there are technical difficulties, turn the video off and then back on again, same with mute toggle. Or, log off from Zoom, and then re-enter..

5.   If you can’t log on, can’t be heard, can’t turn on video, log off from Zoom, and then re-enter.

* If you still can’t log on, call the facilitator (e.g. activity chair) for assistance.
