In 1963, ten women started the Mercer Island Welcome Wagon, dedicated to welcoming families who had just moved to the Island. The group flourished and increased in membership. In 1981, when Ellen Sellin began her year as president, the club name was changed to Mercer Island Women’s Club and membership was opened to all women living on the Island.
Today, the Club continues to welcome women to this fulfilling social and civic organization. Over three hundred and fifty enthusiastic women of all ages enjoy a variety of activities tailored to the interests of the current membership. Whether you are single or married, have free time during the day or in the evening, there are activities for you.
Civic Projects is the fundraising and community charitable outreach arm of the Club. Our main fundraising event is the very festive Luncheon and Holiday Bazaar in early December at the beautiful Glendale Country Club. This luncheon is open to members and their guests, and is by far our most popular luncheon of the year. It’s a wonderful way to get some early holiday shopping done in relaxed environment instead of dealing with crowds at the mall.
This is followed by our special Community luncheon in early spring, featuring popular speakers and open to the public. The proceeds of these events go to the Club’s Civic Projects fund, which is distributed in the spring to local not-for-profit organizations voted upon by Club members.
As with all Club activities, participation in Civic Projects events is voluntary, and there is no requirement of members to contribute to the fund.
Over the last five years, we have provided funding to the following organizations:
- Eastside Domestic Violence
- Harrington House
- Mary’s Place
- Washington Women in Need
- Mercer Island Youth and Family Services
- Mercer Island Farmers’ Market
- Mercer Island Mostly Music in the Park
- Mercer Island Parks and Recreation
